Laura Kellar, a horticulturalist and owner of Kellar Farms Nursery, presented information about running the family-owned nursery which sells ornamental plants and vegetables. Kellar’s daughter, Gretchen, is a sixth grader at Evans City; she also has a son in third grade. You have to have a passion for what you’re doing because you’re out in all kinds of weather. As Gretchen can attest, we were out picking tomatoes in 95 degree weather this summer. Sixth grader Logan McKinney said he enjoyed the hands-on aspects of the presentations and learning about details of the jobs like salary. It’s important to learn about the options out there, he said, to set yourself up for success later on in life. You can’t just grow up and not get a job and live with your parents, Logan said.
